Dorsal Root Ganglion stimulation is a new treatment for those who suffer from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome—sometimes known as Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy.
Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a progressive disease of the nervous system which brings constant, burning, intense pain, which is out of proportion to the original injury. Some patients say the pain of CRPS feels like having their skin set on fire. Along with the pain of CRPS comes changes in the skin, inflammation and extreme sensitivity, and, among some, insomnia and emotional disturbances. Complex Regional Pain Syndrome usually affects the arms or legs, but can occur in any part of the body. As many as two-thirds of those with CRPS report that the chronic pain spread to other areas of the body. According to the McGill Pain Index, CRPS ranks as the most painful type of chronic pain existing today.
What is Dorsal Root Ganglion?
A new option to treat the pain of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome has recently come onto the market, just receiving FDA approval in 2016. This treatment is known as dorsal root ganglion stimulation. The dorsal root ganglion is a nerve structure which lies inside of the spine, relaying information from the body to the central nervous system. The dorsal root ganglion has been likened to a superhighway, connecting the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation is similar to spinal cord stimulation, which blocks the perceptions of pain by implanting a device in the epidural space around the spinal cord which sends out low-level electrical impulses. These impulses change the way the brain perceives pain, relieving the patient of the chronic pain.
Dorsal root ganglion stimulation offers far more targeted pain relief, by implanting a small pulse generator under the skin with four outward leads, which are attached to the pulse generator and the painful area of the body. The patient controls the activation of small electrical impulse to the painful areas, blocking the painful stimuli and providing effective pain relief. Dorsal root ganglion stimulation offers the following benefits:
- Less neural network stimulation
- More targeted pain relief
- More effective pain relief
- Relief from feelings of “pins-and-needles
- A treatment for pain which has failed to respond to other treatments
- Less need for OTC and prescription pain medications with potentially harmful side effects
